Post-Modern Jesus
Christianity is one of the world's largest religions, so the rational conclusion is that there are hundreds of millions of people out there who, if you asked them, would say that they are Christians (yes, my logic is astounding). But (as Steve said, there is always a but) being 'Christian' has become such a broad term these days that it is difficult to know its true meaning. I suppose it originally meant that you were a follower of Jesus Christ. However, even Jesus has a variety of connotations in this post-modern world. The views of Jesus range from one extreme to the other: for some Jesus means the soft-hearted, open-minded teacher; for others he is the war-creating, oppressive, judgemental patriarch of an out-dated religion. I am no expert on post-modernism or theology, and these are just some casual observations that I have made. It has got me thinking... because people view Jesus in different ways, they probably view Christians in different ways, and if people have different perceptions of Christ, then how should Christians behave as 'Christ followers'?

I think the biggest problem with people being confused about who Jesus is, is that they read what other people say who Jesus is.
ReplyDeleteAnyone would think it silly to, for example, say they know lots about Mandela when they've only heard about him from hearsay and people in the ANC. They'd know loads more if they read HIS book or books from reliable sources about him.
Same for Jesus.
There are really reliable first hand accounts of who he is. People should be looking at that. Especially Christians.
r people really interested in Jesus? i think not. i think they concerned for themselves. if Jesus can get us somewhere, we might consider "it". we all start there. seekin pleasure/fulfillment/"more".
ReplyDeleteis God okay with that? coming wanting these things / / when we're still unknowing of the demands of the self-giving Christian life... or is that in-aunthentic christianity? (is that a word?*)
i think he is.
we're made for pleasure. passion. fulfillment. success. satisfaction.
(joshua/sosongs/genesis)\
but in the lifetime (long time) of our christian journey, HE makes a man move FROM his own world ...to God...to others... in finding fulfillment and in having his deepEST needs met// then moving to more 'selflessness'
true christianity cant be thrown to the person who doesnt believe...because the cost is too much and he cant have such 'self abandon'; or is it? can it only be true salvation if from the start one denies ones own life for the sake of Christ.....
